In the pack: ChatGPT, Claude & Gemini Prompts for Coding and Developers
Write an AGENTS.md or CLAUDE.md for Your Repository
Prompt
File tree (top levels): {{FILE_TREE}}
Build, test, lint and run commands (from package.json, Makefile, CI config): {{COMMANDS}}
Conventions, architecture rules and things that have gone wrong before: {{CONVENTIONS}}
Areas agents must not touch, and actions that need human approval: {{BOUNDARIES}}
Write the file with these sections:
1. Project overview: three sentences on what this is and how it's laid out.
2. Commands: exact commands to install, build, run a single test, run the full suite, lint and format. Only commands from the material I gave.
3. Code conventions that a linter doesn't already enforce.
4. Architecture rules: what lives where, and dependency directions to respect.
5. Testing expectations: when to add tests and how to run only the relevant ones.
6. Boundaries: files and directories off-limits, no new dependencies without asking, never commit secrets, never run destructive commands (database drops, force pushes, deploys).
7. Definition of done for any task.
Keep it under about 150 lines. Write rules as short imperatives. Leave out anything the agent can learn by reading the code.
