The evening bell found Sera Vale on her knees at the foot of the Ninth Lantern, polishing the black stone dais with a rag gone soft from forty years of other apprentices' hands. Three fathoms of ribbed glass rose above her, filled with a light that was not quite gold and not quite white, and as the bell's sixth stroke rolled through the Hall of Lights and died, that light shivered, the way it always did when the tide turned beneath the city.

In three years of apprenticeship, Magister Corvin Hale had been late for rounds exactly never. He was the man who arrived before the bells to warm the wax, who counted the galleries the way other men counted coin.
