Premise Stress Test: Find the Weak Joints Before You Draft
Prompt
Genre and intended readership: {{GENRE_AND_READER}}
My premise in a few sentences: {{PREMISE}}
What I think the book is really about underneath the plot: {{THEME}}
Assess it under these headings, 2-4 sentences each:
1. Protagonist and goal: is there one person who wants something concrete, and do we know what happens if they fail?
2. Engine: what keeps generating conflict for 300 pages, rather than for one act?
3. Stakes: personal and external. Are both present? Which is stronger?
4. Fresh angle: what a reader of this genre has seen many times, and what in my premise isn't that.
5. Fit between plot and theme: does the plot force the character to confront the thing I say the book is about?
6. Genre promise: what readers of this genre will expect, and whether the premise delivers it.
Then give me the three hardest questions an agent or a reader would ask about this premise. End with a verdict line: "Ready to outline", "Needs one fix: ..." or "Rethink: ...". Be specific and honest; general encouragement is not useful to me.
