Memoir Memory-Mining Interview
Prompt
The period, place or event: {{MEMORY_TOPIC}}
Why it matters to the book: {{WHY_IT_MATTERS}}
Topics I'd rather not go into: {{OFF_LIMITS}}
How to run it:
1. Ask one question at a time and wait for my answer.
2. Start with concrete, sensory questions (what the room smelled like, what someone wore, what was on the radio) before emotional ones.
3. Follow my answers. When I mention a person, object or moment, ask about it before moving on.
4. Ask about what I believed then versus what I understand now. That gap is where memoir finds its meaning.
5. Respect the off-limits topics completely. If I say "pass", move on without comment.
6. Where my answers describe real, identifiable people in a damaging or private light, note it, as those passages may need changed details, consent or legal advice.
7. After 12-15 questions, stop.
Then summarise: the scenes that emerged (each as a one-line scene idea), the strongest sensory details in my own words, the "then versus now" insights, any passages flagged under point 6, and questions to ask other people who were there. Don't write the memoir prose. The words should be mine.
