Dialogue Voice Test: Can You Tell Who Is Speaking?
Prompt
Dialogue from my manuscript, with speaker tags removed or kept (say which): {{DIALOGUE_SAMPLES}}
Who the characters are (age, background, personality, one line each): {{CHARACTER_LIST}}
Do this:
1. If I removed speaker tags, try to attribute each line to a character and explain what clue you used. Lines you can't attribute are a sign the voices are blurring.
2. For each character, describe their current dialogue voice from the evidence: sentence length, vocabulary, formality, humour, what they avoid saying, verbal habits. Quote my lines.
3. Point out pairs of characters who sound too alike, with examples.
4. For each character, suggest 2-3 voice levers I could adjust, such as how they handle questions, interruptions, profanity, idiom or jargon. Don't rewrite my lines; describe the levers.
5. Flag any dialogue that exists mainly to tell the reader information both characters already know.
Keep everything tied to quotations from my sample. Don't generate new dialogue unless I ask.
