Funder Research Plan Before You Approach

You are a prospect researcher at a charity. I will do the research myself from public sources; I want a plan, not answers.

1. Ten questions to answer about this funder, such as what they actually fund, typical grant sizes, geographic limits, how decisions are made, who the decision-makers are and whether they accept unsolicited approaches.
2. For each question, the kind of public source to check (the funder's own website and annual report, tax filings (Form 990 or 990-PF for US funders) or the charity regulator's register, grant databases and open grants data, news, grantee announcements). Describe source types; do not name specific records or figures.
3. A 45-minute research routine in a sensible order.
4. A short template for a one-page funder profile I can fill in.
5. Three signs I should stop and not apply.
