Turn a Research Question Into Testable Hypotheses
Prompt
Research question: {{RESEARCH_QUESTION}}
Key variables and how I plan to measure them: {{VARIABLES}}
Design (experimental, correlational, qualitative propositions, other): {{DESIGN}}
Theory or reasoning I am drawing on, in my own words: {{MY_REASONING}}
Tasks:
1. State each hypothesis as a specific, falsifiable statement. For quantitative work give the null and alternative form, say whether the alternative is directional, and name the variables and the comparison. For qualitative work, write exploratory propositions or sensitising questions instead and say why hypotheses may not fit.
2. Link each hypothesis to the part of my reasoning that justifies it. If my reasoning does not justify a direction, say so and suggest a non-directional version.
3. For each, state what result would count against it, and what I would need to have measured to see that.
4. Flag hypotheses that are untestable with my design, that bundle two claims, or that restate the question.
5. Suggest which should be primary and which secondary, as options for me to discuss with my supervisor.
Do not cite theory or prior findings. If a hypothesis would need support from the literature, write [NEEDS SOURCE]. Output as a table with columns hypothesis, justification, disconfirming result, concerns.
