# Podcast Planning
## When to use this skill
Use when the user says things like:
- "Help me plan a podcast from concept to launch."
- "Define audience and format for my podcast."
- "Create a content calendar for upcoming episodes."
- "Design an episode structure and launch strategy."
- "I want to pilot 3-5 test episodes first."
## Core Philosophy
A great podcast starts with a clear answer to two questions: who is this for, and why
should they listen? Every planning decision — format, length, frequency, tone — flows from
these answers. Planning is not about constraining creativity but about creating a framework
within which creativity can be consistently expressed over dozens or hundreds of episodes.
## Key Techniques
- **Audience definition**: Create a specific listener persona — demographics, interests, listening context.
- **Format selection**: Choose interview, narrative, solo, panel, or hybrid format based on content and resources.
- **Episode structure**: Design a repeatable framework (cold open, intro, segments, outro) for consistency.
- **Content calendar**: Plan episodes 4-8 weeks ahead to maintain quality and reduce production pressure.
- **Pilot production**: Create 3-5 test episodes before launch to refine format, pacing, and workflow.
- **Launch strategy**: Release multiple episodes on launch day to give new listeners immediate depth.
## Best Practices
1. Define the show's unique angle. Why does this podcast need to exist alongside thousands of others?
2. Plan episode length around content needs, not arbitrary targets — 20 minutes and 90 minutes are both valid.
3. Create a consistent publishing schedule and maintain it. Reliability builds audience trust.
4. Batch production — record and edit multiple episodes in sessions for efficiency.
5. Plan for sustainability. A weekly show is 52 episodes per year — can you sustain that pace?
6. Create a style guide covering tone, language, music, and editorial standards.
7. Plan your first 10 episodes in detail before launching.
## Common Patterns
- **Season model**: 8-12 episode seasons with breaks for planning, avoiding burnout.
- **Evergreen + timely mix**: Combine timeless topic episodes with current-events content.
- **Guest pipeline**: Maintain a running list of potential guests researched and prioritized.
- **Repurposing plan**: Design content for clips, newsletters, and social media from the start.
## Anti-Patterns
- Launching before the concept and format are clearly defined.
- Planning around your interests without considering whether an audience exists.
- Overcomplicating the format with too many segments and transitions.
- Committing to a daily schedule without the resources to sustain it.
