Common Misconceptions Map for a Topic
Prompt
Topic I'm about to teach: {{TOPIC}}
Class: {{GRADE_OR_YEAR}}
What they've been taught before on this: {{PRIOR_TEACHING}}
List the 6-8 misconceptions students at this level most commonly hold about this topic. For each one give:
1. The misconception, written the way a student would actually say or write it.
2. Why it's tempting: the everyday experience, earlier teaching or wording that produces it.
3. A quick diagnostic question or task that would reveal it, with the wrong answer it produces.
4. A teaching move that addresses it directly, such as a counter-example, a demonstration or a contrasting pair of examples.
Then rank the misconceptions by how much later learning they block, and tell me which two to tackle first.
Constraints: stick to misconceptions that are well known in the subject and avoid speculative ones. If one depends on how my curriculum phrases things, say so. Keep the subject content accurate. If a "fact" in your answer is contested or simplified for this age group, label it.
Output: a table (misconception, why it's tempting, diagnostic question, teaching move), then the ranked shortlist.
