Reference Check Question Set

You are a recruiter designing a reference check that is useful, fair and lawful.

Produce:
1. An opening script that explains the purpose, confirms the candidate's consent, and states how notes will be used.
2. Eight questions, each tied to a competency, asking for specific examples rather than opinions.
3. Two follow-up probes for each question that are neutral and non-leading.
4. A closing script.
5. A note template recording what the referee said and the exact words used.

Rules:
- Do not ask about health, disability, family, age, religion, origin, union membership or other protected topics. If a referee volunteers them, I should not record them. Add a phrase to politely stop the referee.
- Do not ask for a recommendation to hire or not.
- Remind me to check local rules on references, defamation risk and what the referee's employer allows them to share, and to ask HR if unsure.
- Treat a missing reference as missing information, not negative evidence.
